Well it’s finally here, Internet Explorer 7. Yet another browser to add to the long list that developers must test when launching websites.
Did the world really need another browser? Where Microsoft left off, Firefox came along with a strong approach at not only making a browser that is just as stable if not more stable than IE, but also make it expandable and developer friendly. Oh wait, it’s also OPEN SOURCE!!!!
And what happened when Firefox came along, Microsoft’s monopolistic hold on the browser market began to deflate. They couldn’t let that happen so back to the drawing board they went. Let’s be innovative and add tabbed browsing they said (Firefox already had that). Let’s add a search field that let’s the user pick where they are searching from they said (Firefox already had that too). Let’s be more innovative and add an RSS reader they said (Thunderbird already had that too).
I won’t deny it, they took the standard feature set of an already user-friendly browser, Firefox, and added extra candy to the jar to make it seem better than Firefox. What Firefox may not have in it’s root install, it has in the multitude of extensions that are out there. And the fact that FF 2.0 isn’t too far away, and 3.0 is already being branstormed should be enough to show the goons at Microsoft that no matter if they continue with an IE8, 9, X, or whatever, Firefox will still be pioneering while they are imitating.
They do say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Firefox wins again!
